Though a little late, a little meaning four weeks, we wanted to introduce our amazing interns this summer! All four of them are rising seniors or juniors from Ringling College of Art and Design.

This past weekend, the creative team at Nickel Communications, including Lindsey, Andy, Jillian, Meghan, and Jessica, won 3rd Place and the Community Choice award for best new Startup business at the Startup Weekend of Tampa Bay for our crime watch application, StreetWize. It was a long weekend, filled with lots of caffeine (especially coffee for Andy, I think he had eight cups on Saturday alone!) and very little sleep.
Here is a little about our app that we pitched, researched, designed and developed with a group of 14 volunteer designers, students and professionals that we came to know over the weekend. StreetWize is an app that taps into emergency service communications and delivers it to your smart phone. Using your phones geo navigation technology, StreetWize allows users to access real time crime data reported in their location. While in the app, users can also respond with pertinent information about a committed crime or report a crime in progress.
Everyone got some sort of prize, Lindsey receiving a brand new iPad Mini for the office, Andy, Jillian, and Jessica receiving gift cards, and Meghan gaining a spinning mop, which she was more than excited for.
Follow our Facebook page (Add Link) and our twitter @NickelTalks for more information and updates about Streetwize and our Startup Weekend trip.
This past Thursday the team, including Kristine, Lindsey, Jillian, Andy, and Eve found themselves tasked with the awful job of trying wonderful food at the preview party for this year’s Savor Sarasota, hosted by Mattison’s Forty-One.
Who doesn’t love work that requires one to “try” some of the exquisite menu items by five local restauranteurs and enjoy the ambiance created in Mattison’s back room? Our life is so hard!
Libby’s Cafe & Bar featured a delicious Toasted Wheatberry ‘N Roasted Brussels Sprouts Salad which I can only assume will be a hot ticked item for this year’s Savor Sarasota. This dish is one of the many items that is a part of the turn towards locally grown and healthful offerings available on their menu.
Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar presented a tasty steak crustini, of which all us enjoyed - except for Andy, crazy vegetarian! When done well this dish is a really delicate marriage between the crusty, warm bread and well marinated steak which creates a textural experience of salty and savory tastes.
Mozaic out did themselves once again with a to die for homemade passionfruit sorbet, a dark chocolate molten cake, and a white chocolate ginger something. We all liked it so much, we forgot to ask what it was called. See Kristine’s video blog with Mozaic for all the details we left out.
With Cafe L’Europe it wasn’t just about the food but the experience of making ze citrus and Grand Marnier crepe. They were so delicious that we ate every last one the chef was willing to make.
Mattison’s, other than hosting an amazing evening, also served a farm fresh dish of free range chicken breast with wild mushroom bread pudding, sautéed kale, and carrot fondu. Chef Paul continues to impress with his flavorful, unique, and healthy fare at each of his locations.
Throughout the evening we at Nickel Communications shot five video blogs featuring each of the chefs from Mattison’s Forty-One, Libby’s Cafe & Bar, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, Cafe L’Europe and Mozaic. These videos can be viewed from the Savor Sarasota website and continue to check out our blog for more updates and reviews this season!

The AAF Suncoast packed the Polo Grill for it's kick off to ADDY season with an insightful and informative panel of experts on How to Win an ADDY. Sam Stern, CEO/Chief Brandtrepreneur of CAP Brand Marketing, Angela Massaro-Fain, President & Partner of Grapevine Communications , and Richard Skiermont, Creative Director at Clarke Advertising & Public Relations shared their experiences in building award winning campaigns. Moderated by Art Mahoney, our biggest take away from the panel was to "Stick to the Creative Brief." With the right strategy and understanding of the clients objectives, the creative will evolve to engage consumers. As we grow we are always looking to improve and we are very thankful to the AAF for putting on anther strong program. Check out a handful of photos captured at the event by Alex Stafford Photography.
